Academics in Finland

Finland is a Northern European Country (Nordic Country). One of the world’s most northern and geographically remote countries is Finland. The Population of Finland is around 5.5 million in an area of 338,455 square kilometres. This country is one of the most stable countries with a top-quality education, economic competitiveness, civil liberties, quality of life, and human development.

Finland is known for Nokia, one of the pioneering high-tech cellphone manufacturer. This small nordic country has several undergraduate and graduate program in English for foreign students. Besides the generous funding and world-class infrastructure, Finnish Universities provide a very high level of support for their employees in term of health care and pension.

The finish is the official language of the country, but almost everybody can speak English. So international students can live in a rather welcoming situation without a serious language problem. Maybe the worst thing about Finland is the bad and very cold weather in winter which is mostly heavy snow.

Academics Positions at the Aalto University

The second-largest Finnish University is Aalto University. It was established in 2010. The campus of Aalto University is located in Espoo, Finland. Aalto University has six schools with nearly 11 000 students and nearly 400 professors. Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers where science and art meet technology and business.

Cost of the living is rather high especially accommodation in large cities like Helsinki. Nevertheless, the salary of PhD students is good enough to cover the daily expenses of PhD students. If you are planning to do your PhD or Postdocs in Finland, you can read more about the salary of PhD students in our previous post.

Title: MSc thesis work: Programming a transceiver in a 5G millimeter-wave mobile phone antenna testbed

Location: Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering

Position: Teaching and research positions

Deadline: 31.05.2021

Summary: The fifth-generation (5G) cellular wireless has started its roll out in many countries. Successful deployment of 5G radios require robust user devices that work in varying operational conditions of a mobile environment. Interaction between a mobile phone and operating users poses a particular challenge for 5G because it uses much higher radio frequencies than traditional cellular systems. Antenna arrays operating at millimeter-waves on a mobile phone suffer from much severer shadowing or degradation of efficiency, due to increased losses in diffraction and penetration through the human body. The appropriate real-time characterization of the antennas and arrays in a 5G mobile phone is therefore an unsolved challenge for the cellular industry. The work in this position contributes to the development of real-time characterization system of antennas and arrays by programming wideband multiple-antenna transceivers and algorithms.

Title: MSc thesis work: Characterization of radar cross section for 6G radio communications and radar systems

Location: Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering

Position: Teaching and research positions

Deadline: 15.06.2021

Summary: The fifth-generation (5G) cellular wireless has started its roll out in many countries. Now research on future generation radio communications started to aim at defining sixth-generation (6G) technical features, applications and ecosystems. One of the most distinguishing features of 6G radios is the more aggressive use of millimeter-wave bands;  the deployments are presently limited to lower millimeter-wave frequencies.  Due to the availability of wider bandwidth, the higher end of millimeter-wave frequencies, i.e., above-100 GHz, gains attention in the research community. Within the community a common question about the use of above-100 GHz radios is, “is it even possible to deliver power from a base station to a mobile station in cellular settings, given the significant link blockage and diffraction losses?” The work in this position addresses this question in terms of electromagnetic field scattering. Numerical and experimental approaches are sought, hoping to create a mathematical model that describes electromagnetic-wave scattering from typical objects found in cellular sites. Such a model also has strong relevance to radar systems operating in above-100 GHz band for safety and security applications.
